Researchers at the University of Zurich discovered that specialized support cells called astrocytes can repopulate damaged brain regions by creating new nuclei and sending them through cellular extensions—a previously unknown repair mechanism observed in mice that challenges the long-standing view that adult brains cannot fully replace lost astrocytes after injury or autoimmune disease.
The findings are from mouse models; translation to human patients will require further research and testing.
