World first: Southern ground hornbill gets 3D printed beak prostheses at Artis Zoo
Reported byNL Times ↗·Sourced by Goodlede
A southern ground hornbill at Amsterdam's Artis Zoo received two 3D-printed prosthetic beaks—the first time in the world both upper and lower beak portions have been restored this way—restoring the bird's ability to forage, preen, and care for itself. The bird began using his new beak the same day the procedure was completed.
Long-term durability and outcomes continue to be monitored by Artis staff.
