New water lily can be seen from space
Reported byPopular Science ↗·Sourced by Goodlede
A new Victoria water lily species, Victoria colombiana, was discovered in the InĂrida River in Colombia after a grower's Instagram post caught the attention of a Royal Botanic Gardens expert, who confirmed its presence via satellite imagery and led an expedition that found the species with help from Indigenous guides and local boat captains.
Researchers estimate only 30 to 50 wild V. colombiana plants exist and the species is extremely vulnerable to extinction.
