Scientists discover new species of horned lizard in Thailand, name it after a 'House of the Dragon' dragon

Researchers Poramad and Krittiya Trivalairat discovered Acanthosaura syrax, a previously unknown horned dragon lizard, at 4,396 feet elevation in Thailand's Mae Wong National Park. They named it after Syrax, the dragon of Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, inspired by the species' distinctive yellow hue and small size. The researchers recommended strengthening protections for the high-elevation habitat where it lives alongside other threatened species including Asian forest tortoises, Oldham's leaf turtles, and Indochinese tigers.
