Dog alerts owner to house fire, then rescues cat during Spokane evacuation

During the Old Trails Fire in Spokane, Washington (now 100% contained), three-year-old German Shepherd Shadow alerted his owner Donna Carberry to an active fire by repeatedly slamming into her back door. She had lost her sense of smell from COVID-19. Shadow then gently placed his paw on the cat so Carberry could pick it up and evacuate with both pets. Best Friends Animal Society, leading the companion animal response for the Washington State Pet Task Force, provided care for Shadow while Carberry recovered from injuries sustained during evacuation.
