Bear-smart corridors create space for Marsican bear recovery
Reported byRewilding Europe ↗·Sourced by Goodlede
Five years of practical work across Italy's Central Apennines has established 16 Bear-Smart Communities, installing 630 preventive electric fences, 76 bear-proof chicken coops, and removing 80 kilometres of barbed wire to help Marsican bears expand safely into human-shared landscapes; a landmark census counts around 81 bears in the population, with well-connected areas supporting more individuals than poorly connected ones.
The Marsican bear population remains critically endangered and faces ongoing challenges; these are foundational measures for recovery, not guarantees of species security.
