Australia Opened a 40-Mile Trek Around Uluru as an Alternative to Climbing

After the Anangu Traditional Owners banned climbing Uluru in 2019, a decade-long partnership led by Tasmanian Walking Company co-owner Brett Godfrey created the 40-mile Uluru Kakararra Trail. A 13-person Anangu steering committee mapped 24 miles of new trails avoiding culturally sensitive areas, and the project cost $18 million and was completed in 2026 as part of the Great Walks of Australia.
