Superheated steam could make industrial drying more sustainable

Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology have developed an electricity-generated superheated steam drying method that keeps steam inside an enclosed system and reuses it instead of releasing it into the atmosphere, significantly reducing energy waste compared to conventional hot-air drying used across food processing, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and fertilizer production. A pilot system has already been built and tested on multiple products.
The pilot system has been tested but large-scale industrial deployment remains ahead.
