1.3m plastic bottles collected in a day in global volunteer ocean cleanup

About 630,000 volunteers took part in the 2025 International Coastal Cleanup, removing almost 13.9 million pieces of rubbish from more than 15,000 miles of coastline and waterways in a single day. Plastic bottles were the most common item at over 1.3 million, alongside 1.2 million cigarette butts, 885,000 bottle caps and 581,000 shopping bags.
The cleanup measures what was collected, not a reduction in plastic entering the ocean; Ocean Conservancy frames the bottle count as evidence that too much plastic is still being produced and mishandled.
