Researchers directly observed helium escaping from the atmosphere of exoplanet LHS 1140c (orbiting a red dwarf 50 light-years away), providing the first direct detection of atmospheric loss from a rocky exoplanet and enabling inference about what remains in its atmosphere after billions of years of evolution.
Scientists remain uncertain whether LHS 1140b, the potentially habitable planet in the same system, retains any atmosphere at all.
