Researchers from Yale and University of Pisa identified two species of Plasmodium parasites in skeletal remains of Grand Duke Francesco de Medici, confirming he died of malaria in 1587, not poisoning as historically suspected. The analysis also found a previously unknown strain of Plasmodium falciparum with unique mutations.
