UN moves away from map that makes Africa look small

The UN General Assembly voted 164 to 1 on Friday to promote the Equal Earth map projection over the 16th-century Mercator projection, which distorts Africa's size—making it appear roughly the same as Greenland despite being about 14 times larger. Togo led the African Union initiative and plans to change its school geography materials by year's end.

The resolution is non-binding and does not affect the use of Mercator for maritime and aerial navigation.
