Teen's Disaster Messaging App Can 'Hop' Across Bluetooth When Cellular Networks Collapse
Reported byPrevention Web ↗·Sourced by Goodlede
Emirhan Duman, 17, built Crisis Connect, a free open-source app that enables phones to communicate directly over Bluetooth and relay messages through a mesh network when internet and cellular services fail. The app supports encrypted messaging, location sharing, SOS broadcasts and voice calls, and was developed over about a year between his classes.
The app requires advance setup and community adoption to be useful; downloading it after a network fails provides limited benefit. Offline communication has real limits including walls, rubble, battery life, and Bluetooth range.
