Squid Are Even More Alien-Like Than We Thought, With an Unmatched Ability to Change Genetic Expression
Reported byScienceAlert ↗·Sourced by Goodlede
UCSF researchers analyzing the longfin inshore squid found nearly 8,000 sites where RNA editing alters proteins across more than 2,000 genes—affecting protein activity, stability, localization, interactions, and even organelle health—far exceeding the RNA-editing capability of any other known creature.
The study examined squid optic lobe and gill tissue; effects of these edits on the animal's actual behavior and survival remain to be explored.
