A team from UCLA observed phonon focusing—a quantum behavior where heat-carrying atomic vibrations travel in specific patterns like rays from a star—at room temperature (27°C) rather than only at ultra-low cryogenic temperatures. The researchers used boron arsenide and a nanoscale gold probe to map the phenomenon and demonstrated that phonons traveled 250 nanometers, a huge distance for this type of experiment, published in Nature Physics.
