Scientists Find a Mountain Glacier That Survived the Last Ice Age
Reported bySciTechDaily ↗·Sourced by Goodlede
Ice cores from the Guliya Plateau in northwestern Tibet may extend back more than 128,000 years—into the last glacial period—making them among the oldest mountain ice cores recovered outside polar regions. Researchers compared cores drilled 23 years apart (1992 and 2015) and used radioactive isotopes of beryllium and chlorine to date the ice, anchoring their chronology to the Leschamp Geomagnetic Excursion roughly 41,000 years ago.
