Harvard researchers developed a 'Colon Chip' model using cells from IBD patients that successfully recreated disease features and revealed fibroblasts actively drive inflammation—findings published in Nature Biomedical Engineering. The chip revealed that fibroblasts from IBD patients, when paired with healthy intestinal cells, were enough to induce disease-like behavior including increased inflammation and barrier leakiness.
The findings are limited to lab models; clinical translation to patient treatments remains future research.
