New vaccine offers protection against deadly diarrhoeal disease

A vaccine candidate called WRSs2 demonstrated 89% efficacy at preventing shigellosis, a leading cause of diarrheal deaths that kills over 1 million people annually, nearly half of them children under age 5, in a rigorous trial of 108 adults published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases this summer.

This is early-stage human testing with a relatively small participant group; further trials will be needed before widespread deployment.
