Researchers discovered a new coral species, Laurinque elenya, thriving in large numbers at depths of 360 to 529 meters off Costa Rica's Pacific coast during 2019 and 2023 expeditions. The coral's anatomy and genetics were so distinct that scientists created an entirely new family, Laurinqueidae, to classify it.
