Mozambique's Maputo National Park showcases biodiversity and shelters migratory birds

Maputo National Park, established in 2021 in southern Mozambique and covering approximately 1,700 square kilometers, provides critical habitat for migratory birds traveling between Arctic breeding grounds and African wintering zones. More than 5,000 animals have been translocated to the park since 2010 as part of restoration efforts including dune stabilization, anti-poaching enforcement, and habitat restoration. Local communities are increasingly involved in mangrove restoration, fisheries management and environmental monitoring.
Protecting individual sites alone is not enough; migratory birds depend on connected networks of habitats across international borders and throughout their entire flyways.
