Maine expands wildlife crossing tunnels to let bears and moose safely cross roads

Maine's Department of Transportation won a federal grant to repair and enlarge two existing culverts in high-strike areas south of Caribou, expanding passages that currently attract bears and foxes but are too small for deer and moose. At least six such wildlife passages are now built or planned across the state, minimizing animal fatalities, human injuries, and vehicle damage.

The expansion is specific to culverts in Maine's high-strike areas; the methodology has been used long-term in the western U.S.
