FDA to require notice of additives in food supply for the first time

The HHS announced a new policy requiring food manufacturers to notify the FDA of additives and provide details on how they are deemed safe, creating for the first time a public database of chemicals in the food supply previously used with little oversight.

Companies are not required to prove existing additives are safe, only to report them; the policy adds oversight and transparency but does not retroactively remove substances already in use. It's a step in the right direction.
