Court orders survey of elephant corridors, seeks ban on fireball use

India's Supreme Court ordered the Union Environment Ministry to conduct a fresh survey of elephant corridors and report obstructions by October 14, and instructed the ministry to prohibit the use of fireballs, fire torches, and 'Hulla Parties' (groups using spiked rods and other coercive measures) to deter elephants from human-dominated areas. The Wildlife Institute of India had identified 150 elephant corridors in 2023, with 15 found to be impaired and 29 used with decreasing frequency.
The survey and ban are court-ordered but not yet implemented; the compliance report is due October 14.
