College tuition at public universities has declined over the past decade

Inflation-adjusted tuition and fees at public universities have fallen by 10% for two-year students and 7% for four-year in-state students over the past decade, according to College Board research. After grant aid, the net cost to four-year public students peaked in 2013; states are now contributing record amounts to student aid alongside increased institutional aid.

The trend applies to tuition and fees only; living expenses remain substantial. Private nonprofit institutions saw 2% tuition increases.
