Bringing back beavers: turning the tide for nature's eco-engineers
Reported byRewilding Europe ↗·Sourced by Goodlede
A 2026 international study in a beaver-modified wetland in Switzerland found the ecosystem stored carbon at rates up to ten times higher than comparable areas without beaver activity, accumulating nearly 1,200 tonnes of carbon over 13 years. Beaver Trust facilitated 22 beaver releases across Britain in 2025, including England's first authorised wild release.
Beaver restoration is underway but populations remain far below historical levels across Europe.
