Reintroduced beavers at the Holnicote estate in Somerset have turned a small watercourse into a wet meadow; British research found 13 beaver dams stored around 1 million litres of additional water, while four wild beaver territories in Devon held more than 24 million litres.
The effects of beaver colonies depend on the shape, soils and land use of their catchment; releasing beavers in Britain may not reproduce the Canadian numbers observed in that different landscape.
