Two parallel Phase 3 clinical trials of the drug upadacitinib in 1,399 patients aged 12–64 with severe alopecia areata found 55% of those on the higher dose (30mg) and 45% on the lower dose (15mg) achieved 80% or more hair regrowth, compared to 1.5–3.4% on placebo, with 13–22.5% regaining complete scalp hair.
Long-term safety and sustained efficacy beyond the 24-week trial period require further study; serious side effects were rare but present in a small proportion of participants.
