13-Year-Old Designs a Chamber That Turns Air Moisture Into Water for Drought-Hit Farms

Roy Kim, a 13-year-old at Whitford Middle School in Beaverton, Oregon, built a chamber that condenses water from the air using a Peltier module, a component that becomes hot on one side and cold on the other when electricity is applied. Air enters past a heated filter, a fan pushes it to the cold surface, and the condensed droplets collect in a funnel that releases water to plants through a valve. A soil-moisture sensor decides when the plants actually need water, and temperature and humidity sensors adjust the airflow. In testing the prototype produced about 10 ml of water in two hours, with a peak efficiency of 135.8 grams per kilowatt-hour. The design has made Kim one of the top 10 national finalists in the 3M Young Scientist Challenge, the annual U.S. middle-school science competition run by 3M and Discovery Education.
