Researchers at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston developed two new live-attenuated vaccines (LMA and LMP) against Yersinia pestis that showed 100 percent effectiveness against pneumonic plague infection in mice, with a prime-boost strategy combining intramuscular injection and nasal delivery. Pneumonic plague is almost always fatal if untreated, and no FDA-approved plague vaccines currently exist, despite hundreds to thousands of cases reported annually, mostly in Africa.
