Vermont's largest energy source is now a virtual power plant

Green Mountain Power's virtual power plant—combining 110 MW of residential batteries, utility-scale storage, and other clean energy sources—saved Vermont customers an estimated $6 million during a July heat wave by dispatching 90 MW during peak demand, equivalent to taking 50,000 homes off the grid. The VPP now supplies nearly 10% of Vermont's summer peak electricity demand, the highest storage-to-state-peak ratio in New England.

Cost savings are realized through avoided peak-period wholesale purchases; broader grid resilience depends on sustained enrollment and battery availability.
