From January to June 2026, 368 utility-scale power plants went online in the US, with utility-scale solar leading at 207 projects and 11,458 megawatts of capacity, followed by 95 battery storage projects with 8,207 megawatts—while fossil fuel plants added only 2,707 megawatts combined.
Solar's generating capacity figures do not account for the fact that solar produces no power at night; batteries and other storage technologies have different operational profiles than traditional power plants.
