Trail cameras capture adorable sighting of first wild pine marten babies born in a century
Reported byDevon Wildlife Trust ↗·Sourced by Goodlede
The Two Moors Pine Marten Project reintroduced 15 pine martens to Dartmoor National Park in 2024 and 19 more in 2025. Trail cameras have now confirmed wild breeding: a female with four kits on Exmoor and another female with kits on Dartmoor in 2025—the first wild births of this critically endangered species in England and Wales in over 100 years after being hunted to extinction.
The population remains small and vulnerable; continued monitoring and community support are essential for long-term recovery.
