Researchers identified an immune mechanism in zebrafish where neutrophils release Il-4 to control inflammation after spinal cord injury, enabling nerve fiber regeneration. When Il-4 was supplied directly to injury sites, spinal cords regenerated completely even without the neutrophils, proving the signaling molecule's essential role in repair.
The findings are limited to zebrafish models.
