Gérard Landry, 64, became the first patient in North America to receive a liver regenerated by the Liver Assist machine at Montreal's CHUM hospital. The technology circulates oxygen-rich fluid through a donated organ outside the body to reverse damage and assess function before transplant, potentially making dozens of additional livers available for transplant in its first year.
This is the first use in North America; long-term outcomes and widespread adoption remain to be demonstrated.
