Scientists at the University of Sheffield's POLARIS research group have developed and advanced a form of MRI using specially prepared xenon gas that can produce detailed images of children's lung structure and function without ionizing radiation. The technique is now being used in patient care at Sheffield Children's Hospital to help identify early signs of lung disease in children with cystic fibrosis.
