New monkey species with orange lips found 'hiding' in DR Congo forest
Reported byBBC Science & Environment ↗·Sourced by Goodlede
Colobus congoensis, a previously unknown monkey species with distinctive pinkish-orange lips, has been confirmed in Lomami National Park, DRC—only the fifth African monkey species discovered in the last 75 years. The international research team used audio recordings, photography, and genetic studies to document the finding, published in PLoS One.
The animals are hunted for meat; formal protection status depends on implementation of conservation measures now that the species is officially recognized.
