New bird species identified on remote Indonesian island

Researchers confirmed that songbirds on Indonesia's Babar Islands constitute a distinct species (cheerful fantail, Rhipidura laguceria), separate from the cinnamon-tailed fantail on nearby Tanimbar Islands, identified through museum specimen analysis, song recordings, and playback experiments over multiple years.

Both newly recognized species have smaller ranges than previously thought, which initially meets thresholds for threatened status, though both appear tolerant of habitat degradation.
