Neuron discovery could explain why some people don't get Alzheimer's

Researchers at the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience identified immature neurons in the hippocampus that maintain youthful gene activity in people resilient to dementia, even when Alzheimer's plaques and tangles are present. The difference between resilient individuals and Alzheimer's patients wasn't the number of these neurons but their behavior—resilient brains show cells activating survival programs while dampening inflammation signals.
