Massachusetts launches statewide accessory dwelling unit program to help homeowners add affordable housing

The Healey-Driscoll Administration has launched the Accessory Dwelling Unit Incentive Program, offering free feasibility studies to homeowners considering adding an ADU (in-law suite, backyard cottage, or basement apartment) to their property. Studies cover permitting, property conditions, design options, and costs through a partnership with the Massachusetts Housing Partnership.

This is the program's first phase; it provides assessment and planning support rather than construction funding or completed units.
