Manitoba overrules rural school board plan to deprive older students of health-care privacy

Manitoba's education minister Tracy Schmidt issued a July 22 directive overturning a Hanover School Division board motion that had violated students' legal rights under 30-year-old mature minor legislation, which guarantees youth 16 and older confidential health-care access independent of parental oversight. The province found the board motion violated the Health Care Directives Act, the Public Health Act, and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
The board motion has been overturned; however, the school board could pursue legal challenge or other resistance.
