Kangaroos cause 90% of wildlife crashes in Australia. This new car feature emits a sound only they can hear

Volkswagen's RooBadge safety feature, co-developed with kangaroo behaviorist Graeme Coulson of the University of Melbourne since 2019, uses machine-learning-optimized high-frequency sounds (bird alarm calls, predatory sounds, kangaroo foot thumps) to deter kangaroos and is now in its fourth round of testing. Kangaroos are responsible for roughly 90% of Australia's wildlife-vehicle collisions, with 35.3 million kangaroos in the country as of 2024.

The RooBadge is still undergoing testing and has not yet reached market; timeline to deployment remains unclear.
