IEA: Global power demand is surging – and renewables are passing coal

The International Energy Agency forecasts that renewable electricity generation will rise more than 8% in 2026, lifting renewables' share of global power from 33% in 2025 to 37% in 2027. Solar is expected to generate around 600 TWh additional power in 2026 and pass wind to become the world's second-largest renewable source. Renewables are forecast to overtake coal as the world's largest electricity source in 2026.
Global carbon emissions from electricity generation are still forecast to rise about 1% in 2026 before leveling off in 2027, driven by rising coal generation in some regions.
