Heatwaves and lightning notified as national disasters, government says
Reported byMongabay India ↗·Sourced by Goodlede
India's central government officially recognized heatwaves and lightning as natural calamities eligible for relief under the State and National Disaster Response Funds, following recommendations from the 16th Finance Commission. The move comes as heatwave cases have reached 4,853 since March 1, 2026, with deaths tracked across 51,000 surveillance units.
Long-term preparedness and capacity-building activities must be funded separately from the disaster response and relief funds.
