Wells, Maine town clerk staff discovered a handwritten copy of the Declaration of Independence recorded in the town record book in July 1776 by Town Clerk Nathaniel Wells—one of only about 26 surviving Dunlap broadsides and part of a system where Massachusetts ordered each town clerk to record the Declaration in official records.
