Europe Approves Bionic Eye to Restore Vision Lost to Blindness

Science Corporation's PRIMA retinal implant received CE mark approval from the European Union, enabling sale in 30 European countries and expected commercial fitting in Germany within weeks. In clinical trials, 38 patients across five countries gained an average of 25.5 letters—more than five lines—on a standard eye chart after implantation.

The device produces black-and-white, narrow-field vision—described as 'like looking through a straw'—and requires months of training to use effectively. Color vision and higher acuity remain future development goals.
