Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania developed a bioengineered chewing gum containing FRIL (an antiviral protein) and protegrin (an antimicrobial peptide) that reduced HPV levels by 93% in saliva samples and brought Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum levels to near-zero in lab tests using oral samples from head and neck cancer patients, while preserving beneficial oral bacteria.
Testing used oral samples in vitro; clinical trials are the next step.
