A genetic study published in the Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom found that Risso's dolphins around the British Isles form a distinct genetic population, isolated from those in the Azores and Mediterranean. Researchers analyzed DNA from animals that stranded between 1992 and 2016, revealing that the British population has developed its own genetic signature and functions as a single cohesive unit.
The genetic boundaries of this population have not yet been fully mapped across the wider Atlantic.
