Astronomers observed a tidal disruption event (AT2024wpp, nicknamed 'the Whippet') in which a black hole consumed a massive star, releasing about 400 billion times the Sun's energy and sending a shock wave at one-fifth light speed; months later, unexpectedly fast-moving helium suggested a structure may have survived the destruction.
The 'surviving structure' is speculative based on helium observations; the mechanism is not yet fully understood.
