Australia eyes early 2030 ocean goal with 67-million hectare MPA expansion

Australia's government has announced a landmark review of its Marine Parks Network that would protect an additional 67 million hectares of ocean, allowing the country to meet its international commitment to safeguard 30% of its total sea area ahead of the original 2030 deadline. The expansion includes boundary strengthening for Norfolk and Lord Howe marine parks, incorporation of Gifford Marine Park, and $5.6 million in new funding for First Nations, community, scientist, and fisher conservation projects.

This is a proposal under public consultation; final management plans and protection levels depend on the outcomes of that process and ongoing implementation.
