LiDAR scanning revealed 396 previously unknown earthworks built by the ancient Aquiry civilization in southwestern Brazil between 600 B.C. and A.D. 850, suggesting more than 20,000 monumental sites may remain undiscovered and indicating the region supported 1.25 to 3 million people at its peak.
The Aquiry civilization remains largely mysterious; researchers don't know why it declined between A.D. 850 and 950.
